West Cork GAA Monster Blitz U8 & U10 Finals Provide a Fitting Climax to 2013
With a hectic programme of games planned for the next month, the launch of the Monster Blitz GAA finals for 2013 took place in Clonakilty GAA Grounds at Ahamilla recently. With over four thousand boys having attended official Monster blitzes at venues across West Cork over the summer at U8 and U10 level, in both football and hurling, the next four Saturday mornings will see a fitting climax to a busy season.
Present at the launch were players and parents from a number of clubs, as well as West Region PRO Ursula Hennessy of Ballinascarthy, Chairman of Clonakilty GAA Seamus O'Brien and Clonakilty GAA Complex staff Timmy Anglin, John Collins and Carmel Calnan. Also present were coaches Diarmuid O'Donovan, Clonakilty, Liam Hurley, O'Donovan Rossa, Gavin Twohig, Kilmeen, Steve Hurley, Clann na nGael and Mark O'Donovan, Bantry.
Run by the Carbery Beara GDA Kevin O'Donovan and GPO James McCarthy, in conjunction with the Coiste na nOg West Region committee, the 2013 U8 & U10 Monster Blitz series took place on 14 designated Saturdays throughout the summer in venues such as Clonakilty, Skibbereen, Bantry, Bandon, Dunmanway and Ballineen / Enniskeane. Over forty clubs attended in total, with up to forty teams lining out on each occasion. This was in addition to huge numbers of blitzes and games also organised by clubs and regional officers, while similar Monster blitz programmes have also run throughout the county under the GDAs in each region.
All games have been played under Go Games rules, with modified rules at each age level to suit the developmental stage of the players involved. The emphasis at each blitz has been on participation and fun, with all players playing three games at each blitz. Small-sided teams have allowed all players to get as many touches as possible, while playing-zones at U8 have helped to coach players on playing within a team environment.
Almost all clubs have fielded multiple teams on each occasion, with several games running simultaneously. Such levels of activity have been testament to the magnificent facilities with a number of pitches now found in many GAA clubs across West Cork. One such venue is Clonakilty GAA Club's spectacular home at Ahamilla, which has seen most activity over the summer and which now fittingly hosts the football finals at U8 and U10 level.
On these dates, complex manager Timmy Anglin and his staff will also offer all teams the opportunity to avail of the first class catering facilities with hot food ready for all players at the final whistle. Meals can be booked as teams are being entered. Meanwhile, the hurling finals take place at Enniskeane and Dunmanway on September 28th and October 5th, respectively.
Entry to each blitz in the series can be done by texting Kevin O'Donovan at 086-7753567. All entries must be in by lunchtime on the Tuesday before each blitz. Please indicate the number of teams per club, also.
