96FM C103 Sports Award: Lawton Brothers 2013-03-16 09:09:00

On a weekend of doubles in Cork, there was very special and unique presentation when the Lawton brothers, Barry and Brian, were presented with the 96FM/C103 GAA Sports Award for February in association with the Rochestown Park Hotel.

Barry and Brian were honoured for becoming the first brothers from Cork to win Fitzgibbon Cup medals with UCC on the field and on the same day - in the win over Mary I in the final, they both scored 2 points each.

Barry replied on behalf of the winners and expressed delight at being chosen and said it was a wonderful occasion for UCC and it was an honour to be part of such a quality team on and off the field and he also thanked both the Rochestown Park Hotel and 96FM/C103 for the award.

Many tributes were paid to the Castlemartyr clubmen at the function, with County Board Treasurer Pearse Murphy acknowledging their wonderful achievement while also lauding the manner in which hurling and football is promoted in UCC.

Tom Tobin, Operations Manager at the hotel, and Kieran McGeary 96FM also congratulated Barry and Brian on their well deserved award.

In attendance were members of the Lawton family including their uncle Seamus who is a current Cork Intermediate Hurling selector, the Evening Echo's John Horgan, a proud Castlemartyr man, John Cashman and John Tarrant from the C103 Sports team and the Cork Independent's Louise Cashell, along with Carey Joyce, Castlemartyr Chairman.

Several members of the UCC team were in attendance including Seamus Harnedy, Kilian Murphy, Conor Lehane, Cillian Burke, Willie Griffin, Darren McCarthy and Paul Haughney.

Both John Grainger and Paul Haughney were previous monthly award winners.
