GAA Wins ‘Best Rights Holder in Europe' at the European Sponsorship Association Awards in London

The Gaelic Athletic Association recently celebrated among top global and national brands at the European Sponsorship Association's Excellence Awards in London. The GAA received industry acclaim in taking top honours in the ESA Rights Holder Award category for its hugely successful partnership with Kellogg's on the GAA Cúl Camps. Entries were received from 13 countries across Europe and given the huge international sporting events of 2012, it was a remarkable success for the GAA.

2012 marked the first year of Kellogg's sponsorship of the GAA Cúl Camps and the initiatives launched between the GAA and the sponsor yielded phenomenal results. A record number of over 82,000 children participated (up 6% v. 2011) in the highest ever number of camps (1,013), far exceeding the promotional and recruitment objectives of both the GAA and Kellogg's. The continued success of the Kellogg's Cúl Camps is down to the imaginative promotional support of the GAA and Kellogg's, coupled with a massive contribution nationwide from county coordinators and GAA clubs across Ireland.

Prestigious brands such as BMW, Cisco, Mars, MasterCard and O2 were among those awarded at ESA's 7th annual awards ceremony, hosted at the British Music Experience at The O2 in London. ESA's Excellence Awards recognise excellence within the sponsorship industry across Europe, celebrating campaigns in all sectors - sport, culture, entertainment, media and corporate responsibility.

There were 11 awards categories in total with a top three awarded in the ‘Best of Europe' category for outstanding national campaigns in their respective countries during 2012. SuperValu, sponsor of the GAA Football All-Ireland Championship, achieved third place in this prestigious category, resulting in further commendation for the GAA, twice recognized in the 13 awards presented on the night.

Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Liam Ó Néill said: ‘We are delighted that a key sponsorship for the Association that helps raise the profile of our underage activity has been recognised on an international platform. Values such as family, Irishness and community are core to the GAA's identity and contribute strongly to the Association's enduring attractiveness to sponsors and partners and I believe that these core traits were reflected in the successful campaign which saw the number of children participating in our camps rise in 2012.

This is a fitting end to 2012 from a sponsorship perspective, a year in which we signed nine long-term extensions with sponsors of various national competitions and I acknowledge their on-going support of our games and activities.'

Bernadette Grant, Marketing Director Kellogg Company of Ireland said: "This is fantastic recognition for Kellogg's GAA Cúl Camps. 2012 was the first year of the Kellogg's GAA Cúl Camps sponsorship and it was extremely successful. We look forward to continuing our relationship with the GAA over the next number of years".

John Trainor, European Sponsorship Association Director for Ireland, said: "The success of Supervalu and GAA with Kellogg's in these awards is a real positive for the sponsorship industry in Ireland as they were competing in highly competitive categories. To see two GAA sponsorships achieve recognition within the multi-billion euro European sponsorship market is testimony to the quality of sponsorship activity that brands in Ireland are producing in sponsorship".
