Allianz Hurling League Division 1 Quarter-Final

LIMERICK 1-20 CORK 1-18

By Denis Hurley at Pairc Ui Rinn

A late surge was vital as Limerick booked their place in the Allianz HL Division 1 semi-finals by seeing off Cork at Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday.

While Patrick Horgan’s eighth point levelled the game for Cork at 1-17 each in the 67th minute, the Shannonsiders had three in a row from Kyle Hayes, Gearóid Hegarty, and John Fitzgibbon to open up the biggest lead the game had seen since Cork were 1-8 to 1-5 in front after 26 minutes.

Mark Coleman did point a late 65 as Cork sought to seize victory, but no injury-time goal chance presented itself and John Kiely’s side march on to a last-four clash with Galway.

It was a game of high intensity, and both sides enjoyed periods on top. David Dempsey’s goal in the 12th minute capped a good Limerick start as they opened up a 1-4 to 0-2 lead, but Cork came roaring back.

An unanswered 1-5 had them 1-8 to 1-5 in front, with Patrick Horgan on the mark from frees while Mark Coleman and Alan Cadogan were also on target before Luke Meade snaffled a quickfire 1-1, Lorcán McLoughlin setting up the goal.

Three Shane Dowling points had Limerick level once more and Gearóid Hegarty and Cadogan exchanged points as the teams went in tied at 1-9 each at half-time.

The 7,892 present witnessed a second half of continued ups and downs as the teams took it in turns to move ahead with pairs of points.

When Limerick necklaced three in a row together, one by Hegarty and two from Dowling, to lead by 1-16 to 1-14 with 14 minutes left, they seemed set to push on but two Horgan frees had Cork level once more.

Down the home stretch, it was anyone’s, but ultimately Limerick won out.
