Mark Ellis first played hurling with his uncles in County Clare when he was four or five years old, and his grandfather has been the biggest influence on his career. His greatest moment in sport was winning the County U21 Hurling Championship in 2009, while his biggest disappointment has been losing the Munster U21 Final against Limerick in 2011. The greatest player he has ever seen is Joe Canning, who would also be his choice of purchase if there was a transfer market in hurling. His best hurling memories outside of playing involve going to all the Clare games during their hurling rennaissance in the 1990s, and also the Cork-Waterford rivalry of the past decade. His favourite sport other than hurling is Gaelic Football. In ten years' time, he hopes to be happy, healthy and weighed down with All-Ireland medals!!!
