From the Ballymartle club based in Riverstick and currently studying at UCC, Darren first played hurling aged four or five down in the local hall, and also plays out field for his club. He considers first touch to be the most important skill in hurling and if he could change anything about the game, he would like to see every tie finished out on the day to avoid replays. His best hurling memory outside of playing is Ballymartle winning the County Intermediate title in 2006, while as a player, the highlights have been winning the All-Ireland Club Final with his club in Croke Park, and both Fitzgibbon victories with UCC. Henry Shefflin is the greatest player he has ever seen, and if there was a transfer market, he would buy Joe Canning. He would like to meet Floyd Mayweather, Mario Balotelli or Eminem, and in ten years' time, hopes to be finished college and still hurling for Cork.
