January award for Pearse;

The distinction of becoming the 1st winner of the 96FM/C103 GAA Sports Star  in association with the Rochestown Park Hotel award for 2018 goes to former County Board Treasurer Pearse Murphy.
Pearse was honoured for his outstanding service to the GAA and in particular as Treasurer a role he held for over 20 years and which he vacated at the Board’s Annual Convention last December.
In accepting the award Pearse in a wide ranging and at times emotional response said ‘I feel very humbled to be standing here in a county where we have so many outstanding individuals but I am honoured that the judges felt fit to choose me and for that my thanks to 96FM/C103 and the Rochestown Park Hotel.’
Pearse also paid tribute to the many people who had assisted him during his years as Treasurer ‘especially on the day of big matches in Pairc Ui Rinn and Pairc Ui Chaoimh’
He also had special words for his family and his club Adrigole, “my club have also been very supportive and I am delighted so many of them are here tonight, especially former and indeed outstanding footballers, who were in attendance, Kevin Jer O’Sullivan and Bernie O’Neill and Urhan man Con Paddy O’Sullivan.”
County Board Chairperson Tracey Kennedy in paying tribute said “at our recent convention the question was asked has Pearse been our greatest ever volunteer and it’s hard to disagree as his remarkable service is very hard to quantify and I delighted that he is been honoured here tonight it is well deserved.”
Continuing she said “we consider ourselves fortunate that Pearse experience will not be lost to us and I would like to thank 96FM/C103 and the Rochestown Park Hotel for their continued support of these awards and this wonderful gesture to Pearse.”
Diarmuid Vaughan Rochestown Park Hotel and Kieran Mc Geary 96FM/C103 also congratulated Pearse on this well deserved award and wished well in his continuing work for the GAA in Cork and Munster.
Pearse in his 20 years as Treasurer served with 14 Chairman, and the 5 surviving Christy Cooney, Jerry O’Sullivan, Brian Barrett, Bob Ryan and Ger Lane were present as was current officers Frank Murphy, Jerry Walsh, Des Cullinane, Donal Leahy and Senior Administrator Diarmuid O’Donovan.
Adrigle club were represented by Officers Kevin Green and MJ O’Sullivan, Joe Blake and family members including his brother Frank.
Among the many roles that Pearse undertakes is Chairman of the Cork Clubs Draw, Richard Murphy, Martin Bowen, Niall Keane and Norma Nahle were present along with many who have worked in varying roles over the years including with Claire Allen, Bernard Corcoran, Finbarr Hennessey, Denis Hurley, John Purcell, John Crean and the ever helpful Mairead and Barbara from the Board’s main office.
This is the 15th year of the awards and Pearse thus becomes the 1st recipient in a list that is sure to produce some many more deserving winners as the season evolves.
