Ballincollig win the Kelleher Shield for the first time   26/11/2017

Congratulations to Ballincollig, who won the Kelleher Shield title for the first time on Friday night with a hard-fought victory over Clonakilty at Ovens.
Clonakilty began the brighter of the two sides establishing a 4 point lead after the 1st Qtr with some excellent scores. After a fairly even 2nd Qtr, Clonakilty at half time by 1-6 to 0-4. In the second half Ballincollig reduced the lead to single point while holding Clonakilty scoreless in the 3rd Qtr. Clonakilty reply by scoring 2 points to re-establish a 3 point lead by the 50min. Ballincollig replied by scoring 3 points in the last 5 mins to draw level. In extra time Ballincollig were the stronger team out scoring Clonakilty 0-3 to 0-1 to secure the title and take home the Kelleher Shield,

Kelleher Shield - Division 1 Football League
This impressive trophy was presented by John Kelleher in 1913, making it one of the oldest trophies in the county. It was first won by Bantry in 1913, followed by Fermoy the following year. John Kelleher was Managing Director of T. Lyons and Co. and the Shield was presented for the purpose of it being competed for by football teams. Mr. Kelleher had a remarkable business career, entering the firm T. Lyons and Co. as a thirteen year old in 1859 and becoming Managing Director fourteen years later in 1873. When he retired in 1932, he had been with the company for 73 years, 59 of which were as its Managing Director.
